The Ones We Love

It seems cliche to add this story about my dog, Sammy. However, ever since Sammy and I became a little family unit...he's been my dearest love. The day I graduated college, my sister asked me what I wanted for a gift. I jokingly said, "Well, I'm moving out into an apartment and am going to be living by myself for the first time. I think Dad would be happier about that if I had a dog." Within 20 minutes of graduating, my sister whisked me away to the Oregon Humane Society in NE Portland. Sammy was sitting in a kennel area with his legs stretched out behind him like frog legs...and that's when I knew he'd be coming home with me.
The first year of Sammy living with me was terrible! He had separation anxiety so bad that he actually bent the bars back on one of those giant metal kennels while I was away at graduate school for a couple hours. I came home to find bloody paw prints all over the house and Sammy bleeding from the mouth. $600 worth of dental work later, the vet recommended that I put Sammy on what he called "doggie prozac." Yes. My dog was depressed.
Wouldn't you be depressed too if you were beaten by your previous owner, and adopted once to be returned within a week because the new adoptive family didn't want to help you with your problem?
Sammy became a staple at work and quickly learned how to let people pet him while being an office dog. He has since recovered from his bout of depression. Now the only thing I have to worry about is remembering to tape the fridge shut so he doesn't help himself to dinner while I'm out!
So, this is Sammy. My one that I love.
