My trip to Mexico

In November of 2008 I headed to Puerto Penasco, Mexico, also known as Rocky Point. The town is located at 31°19"0' N, 113°32"0' W, on the north end of the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) and 66 miles south of the U.S. borders. I first flew to Phoenix then drove with friends to Puerto Penasco. The trip from Phoenix, with beautiful nature scenery, took about four hours. The town is witnesseing developing construction projects for tourism, which seems to be the main industry there, followed by fishing.
Sunset on the Sea of Cortez is splendid, a joy to watch. in the early morning and late afternoon dolphins can be seen playing and feeding. The beach experiences impressive tides of up to 23 feet betwen high and low tides. The water is very calm and pleasant.
Starting in the mid 50's, shrimp industry developed, with markets in Arizona and New Mexico. By the early 80's over 80% of the economy was based on fishing and shrimping. The fish stock in the area got nearly wiped out after the Mexican government allowed Japanese and Korean fishing in the Sea of Cortez. In 1994, Mexico declared the northern part of the Sea of Cortez to be an International Biosphere Reserve. This led to a significant decline in the fishing industry in Puerto Penasco. Today tourism is the most important economic sector. Fishing remains active, and my chatting with the local fishermen was a pleasant experience in general.
