Middle Creek WMA - a Slice of Paradise in Central Pennsylvania

Middle Creek Morning

The Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, located about one mile south of Kleinfeltersville in Central PA, is 5,000+ acre property set aside for the protection, propagation, management, preservation and controlled harvest of wildlife. It provides habitat for waterfowl, deer and other wildlife.

My husband and I have come to think of Middle Creek as our own "back yard" and often go there just to take a break from the work-a-day world and reconnect with nature. There is a one-way scenic loop road that is open from mid-April through late September. Canada geese are year-round residents, raising little ones which start to hatch from late April into early May. The month between February 15 and March 15 is the peak time to catch up with the thousands of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans which pass through Central PA on their way southward and make a stop-over at Middle Creek.

Bobolinks, Meadowlarks, Tree Swallows, Red-Winged Blackbirds, Eastern Kingbirds, Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, Purple Martins and more can be found in the Middle Creek area during the Spring/Summer. The visitor center has a large windowed wall which overlooks the lake and they have binoculars available for use at the center.

The visitor center itself is a feast for the eyes in the Summer. The flower beds are home to a host of butterfly-attracting plants.

If you ever make it out to Middle Creek, be sure to bring your binoculars and your camera!
