The Black Swan and the City

Story by: Penny, Mary A., Lynn, John L., J.Blacklist, Steven H., and Elfrieda

It was a black swan called "Eddie", that likes to go to the city to visit his friends at the Lake Eola...Eddie soon realize that he was alone.. they left him behind due a storm that was getting to close to the city.... since Eddie never listen to his friends because he think he knows everything...he decided that since he was here anyway he might as well enjoy a swim. Suddenly, the wind began to pick up, and the sky darkened...

So Eddie did know a thing or two about cities, but far less about being a friend and having friends. Nonetheless, he thought he'd stick it out a bit and see what city life had to offer...He hopped onto the shore and wandered to where he heard some people talking. There on a bench was a young boy, crying...

Eddie noticed that the boy was horribly disfigured, perhaps by fire or a terrible accident. The wind began to whip the leaves around the crying boy and the water was getting a bit rough as well...

In that instant, Eddie forgot how lonely and scared HE had been and flew up onto the bench by the young boy. He spread his wings in order to try to shelter him from the blasts of the wind...Eddie wasn't sure if he should approach the boy. He had never been this close to a human before. And what was that awful noise the human was making. Just then the human raised his head and said, "What are you staring at? Haven't you ever seen a lost boy before?" Eddie was amazed, could this boy have something in common with him? Maybe they could help each other find their family. Eddie said, "I'm Eddie and I'm lost too." The boy looked stunned, but said nothing. Eddie went on, "I was thinking maybe we could help each other." The boy looked at him wide eyed and said, "You can talk?" "Of course I can talk," Said Eddie.

"Of course I can talk," Eddie repeated, pulling his warm wings closer around the boy to protect him from the coming storm, "AND young boys can fly."

Although he was alone and frightened the boy laughed at the suggestion, imagining flapping his arms and lifting from the bench and soaring to a safe and friendly place with lots of friends who didn't notice the visible scars and worked to soothe the invisible ones. "That's not possible," he said to the swan, breathing in the warm softness of the down along the bird's chest. "Impossible, nothing!" said the swan. "I suppose 5 minutes ago you thought talking swans were impossible. And there are more ways to fly than simply sprouting feathers and floating on air. So many many more ways for young boys to fly," the swan said, so glad now that he'd taken the chance to approach the boy.

For the first time, Eddie saw what resembled a smile, come to the boy's face. Eddie realized that he was no longer alone or afraid.

Eddie, the swan, and the boy....different in every way, one not even human, yet.....they found each other, found a way to help each other......they overcame their differences......in the end they needed each other.
