Seeing New
By Mary Ann Reilly

As a writer, I know a lot about revision. No work of mine simply stands as is, but rather a re-envisioning process always seems critical, if not simply practical. It's how I have always worked and what is required with anything I have ever published.
Yet, for some reason, this necessary stage in writing seemed not as apparent in my work as an artist—until more recently. What I am discovering is that photographs of mine that have not caught my eye right after shooting are ones I am reviewing again.
What I missed the first time around is the subject of this essay as all of the images presented here were cast asides.
It seems to me with the passage of time, the way I return and see "old" photographs is significantly different than the first time. It's like setting aside a poem and finding the work a year later.
Perspectives change. Techniques change. I change.
Take a look through the collection of photographs you have set aside, perhaps a jewel or two awaits you...
