Los Hijos del Maiz

These photos capture several moments of my journey throughout Central America, where I studied abroad for a semester in the Spring of 2007. On the first part of the program half of our group spent a week living with native families in a rural Guatemalan town, Cantel, outside of Quetzaltenango (affectionately known as Xela). These people of Mayan descent, many of whom are now converted to one version or another of Christianity, still hold within their souls a strong spiritual and vital connection to the Earth and the food it serves them. The history and the fate of these Mayan peoples is most certainly woven with that of the corn plant.
These are the sons (and daughters) of the corn, los hijos del maiz.
