Cans Festival @ Leak Street

This is what's left from the Cans Festival, a street party of stencil art and graffiti, which took place on May 5th 2008 on Leak Street, London SE1: hundreds of art works made with various techniques, created by "the stars" (including Banksy himself, Jef Aerosol, Faile, Bandit...) but also many less known artists from around the world. Most of the presented works are at very high artistic/conceptual level, but what I like best is the open character of the exposition. I like to visit this unique space every couple of weeks to watch how it has changed. It's actually more like a living organism that regular exposition - presented works are changing in time, they are continuously being creatively commented, altered, replaced, reworked by another artists.
Leak Street might not be the essence of street art, surely not for "purists", as it lacks the original context of urban space, interference with the city landscape and the passer/viewer, element of surprise, etc. But if treated as a gallery, this might be Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Street Art, But Were Afraid To Ask - and all in one tunnel!
Leak Street is definitely my favourite gallery in London at the moment.
