At the beginning of February, the Venerable Lama Losang Samten proceeded on the Wheel of Time Mandala after approval from the Dalai Lama. A Tibetan monk, Samten proceeded on a solo project at California State University, Chco.
One of only 100 people worldwide who can do these sand sculpture projects, Samten worked within a platform constructed at the Bell Memorial Union of Chico State on a project that is normally done by four monks.
Samten considers himself an artist, even though the studies he has undertaken on this mandala, which means circles, brings in the skills of an engineer, a teacher, and a performer.
Having studied his craft in India, Samten uses each mandala to pass on lessons of peace to each audience
When I asked him what he wanted people to take away from his design, he said "Peace. Why not?"
