Shentai

Shentai 9

We live in an age of customized entertainment. Netflix, Tivo, video games, all provide us with a personalized, custom tailored experience, focus-grouped and narrow-casted for our viewing pleasure. Shentai was different. Local artists, dancers, musicians, businesses, and freaks came together to give the community a shared event. A shared spectacle to behold and be a part of.

This photography was a collabarative effort between photographers Jeremy Mullis, Christa Slotboom, and myself. Our intent was to capture the energy of the production from beginning to end, attending a number of rehearsals and performances over several weeks. A strictly documentary style of photography seemed inadequate. Frenetic and surreal, Shentai required a more engaged style of shooting. In some ways, our shooting style mirrored the event, a collaborative project with multiple points of view and room for experimentation.
