Showcasing New York

Nassau Coliseum

I got an email 2 days ago from Lorella Praeli saying that they want to use my photo of Nassau Coliseum as one of several pictures used in a video display to showcase New York State at the Democratic National Convention in Denver! Unfortunately due to the format of display, they will not be able to have a way to accredit my name. I don't know if it will be broadcast in any of the coverage of the convention but if you are watching or especially if you go, look out for it ;-)

I recently found out -the hard way- what it's like to have your work appropriated without getting credit. Back in October, I was photographing a rally being held by Ralph Nader on Wall Street. I'd covered him the day before, so I wasn't terribly excited by the prospect...still, it was a rowdy, fun crowd and I was starting to get into things when I noticed some of the posters his supporters were carrying had an incredibly familiar image on them. A half hour into the event, it suddenly dawned on me....somebody on his campaign had appropriated an image of mine, one I took of him two years ago in Union Square!
I like Nader, and ended up voting for him, but it still got on my nerves seeing my work stolen like that. Still, his staff was incredibly polite about it, offering their apologies and eventually giving me credit on his website. I was even offered some compensation (though not a whole lot,) so I decided not to take the matter any further.
You're lucky they even asked permission. The Bush campaign was notorious for using material without permission or credit.
