Vanishing America ... going, going.....gone

Vanishing America

As I drove home this evening, I happened past one of my favorite buildings on Rte. 501 near Lititz, an octagonal garage which sits on an old farm property. I had seen the dumpster sitting next to it the last time I drove by it and had feared the worst. Today my suspicions were confirmed, they are in the process of tearing it down.

I see history disappearing into the landscape all around me. No one is taught the stories of these buildings or the people who once inhabited them. I feel as though photographing these forgotten edifices connects me them somehow and may help others to keep their eyes open and notice the beauty in fading paint and sagging rooflines.

08.03.2008 - UPDATE

The octagon garage WAS torn down, but they are building a new one that looks like it will be the same shape! I'm excited to see what it will look like when completed.

The 105 year old school house just started to come down this past week.
