What city do you live in? What neighborhood?
Hughesdale is a south-eastern suburb of Melbourne, the capital of the state of Victoria, Australia.
What are some adjectives that describe your neighborhood?
Greek Easter's illegal fireworks in the street, Indian students working as store clerks, wide streets with new roundabouts, California bungalows and new dual occupancy houses on blocks where fruit trees once grew, traffic, school kids, having coffee and cake in the mall, takeaway souvlaki, peace and quiet, dog walkers, young marrieds and gay couples with pets... an up and coming neighbourhood with high property prices...
How long have you lived there, and what brought you there?
I have lived here 11 years. Love bought me here.
What is your favorite thing about this place? Your least favorite?
Favourite: The quiet of suburbia, the large block of land our house is on means we have a lovely garden and the city is close, by train or freeway.
Least favourite: Not a lot, really.
Do you feel that you belong there?
Most definitely.
What is the most common misconception about where you live?
That life in the suburbs is boring.
What is a special fact about your city that you have to live there to know?
Ferrari pizza in Atherton Road Oakleigh makes the best pizza in Australia!
What aspect of your city do you secretly love?
What's there to keep secret? Melbourne is one of the world's greatest cities. It is a very special place to live and work - and it is always a wonderful city to return to after a journey away.
Anything else you'd like to add?
These photographs were taken on a rainy Sunday afternoon in June 2008. I went for a walk and remembered to take my camera. I was surprised by what I found just a few streets away from my home.
