The village of Avebury, located in Marlborough county UK, is the site of the largest known stone ring in the world. It dates to around 5,000 years ago, significantly older than Stonehenge, which is located about 20 miles to the south. The stones at Avebury range in height from nine feet to over twenty feet, and some weigh over 40 tons. Unlike Stonehenge, where the power and majesty lies in the ensemble, each of the stones of Avebury is free standing and each is remarkably different from the others - an "individual" with a unique identity, a distinct mystery which I tried to capture in this series of portraits.
