Speed Cubing's 2008 Cincinnati Spring Open

News Reel Theater

Ever wonder how to solve a Rubik's cube?

The group of people who gathered in Cincinnati for the 2008 Cincinnati Spring Open, a World Cube Association sanctioned event, can help you.

The venue for this event was the News Reel Theater in Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Station.

The process for "Speed Cubing" goes like this. A contestant is presented with a covered cub. It's uncovered, then they can look at it and hold it for 15 seconds but they must return it to the table by the end of that time. Then the timer starts and the solving begins. When they're finished they set (drop) their cube down and pressure (slap) the timer to stop it.

Historically, the Rubik's cube is a 3x3x3 cube or just 3x3 for short. Now there are 4x4's and 5x5's. There also is a 3x3 one handed event.

Yes, people do it blindfolded too. They get a cube AND the timer starts. Without the blindfold they can study the cube for a long as they want. However, the CLOCK is TICKING, counting their time. Then they put on a blindfold, the TIMER still RUNNING, and solve it. People do this with 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 cubes.
