Here Come the Conquerors

I

France. In the city of Caen, Normandy, which is located a few kilometers far from D-Day beaches, football aficionados can go and see the Conquerants play Sunday games against other visiting teams of the French American Football league. Although not yet programmed on any French TV channels, Football is developping fast and teams have been founded all over France over the last few years and a championship set up to allow them to compete. Caen's Conquerants were named after William the Conqueror, the Norman Prince who became King of England after invading the country at the battle of Hastings in 1066. More than ten centuries ago, William imposed the use of the French language at the court of England, thus introducing many French words that are still part of standard English today. But unlike William who ruled England the French way, the Conquerants are now proud of happily celebrating American popular culture and English idioms every Sunday on their own field at the foot of William's 11th Century castle in Caen. Last Sunday May 18th, the Conquerants played their last game of the season and won battle against the Chantilly Foxes.
