High Contrast at Sea
By Chris Whitney
10 May 2008
Thousands of miles from Maryland's Chesapeake Bay and 25 years later, I scanned a strip of TriX film. My Nikon Coolscan settings were improper; my monitor revealed a dark and contrasty image.
Just before deleting the image for a re-scan, I studied the high contrast lines and the effect began to take hold on my imagination. The image evoked my memory of being on a bouncing boat, in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, photographing sailboat races many years ago. Geometric shapes of the sails, lines of the masts and the grainy canvas of the sea connected my past and present and begged for more scans.
