Exploring One's Own Form - HNT

Sun Spot
Light and Shadow

I've been playing around recently with black and white images and since I'm the most available model I have a lot of what I've accomplished have been self portraits. The lens is a different kind of mirror, it's not fleeting. I've found myself poring over these images and becoming more aware of my own form. It's been a great journey. One I've decided to share.

As I have begun my journey into the self portrait, and particular the semi nude image, I have been reminded of the 1950's photographers. And flashes of painted images I have been exposed to over my few years Reubens, Degas, Michaelangelo the list could go on forever. The artistic appreciation of the human form has gone on for hundreds of years. I'm inspired to contribute my own interpretation.

I am no Degas ballet dancer, more an overgrown cherub. Echoing in my mind's ear are the words of a training fine artist. She'd been studying 'life portraiture' and commented how all the models seemed a similar shape and how interesting it would be to have a model with folds of flesh. I am challenged to find the beauty in my own form that we as a Western Culture would often think of as not at all desirable. And yet how often do I meet people attracted to a body shape with more 'cuddle'. I aim to bring images that artistically portray the larger human form.

A friend of mine has a blog and participates in a blog phenomenon called HNT (Nalf Nekkid Thursday). Some of the contributors post beautifully crafted images, others prefer a more raw presentation. I propose to post my HNT here, with adherence to JPG Magazine's photo guidelines.

Here's my challenge: join me! Discover yourself in front of your own lens. Be brave, be daring and most of all be artistic and creative.

A bit of background can be found on Os Basso's blog Views from the Back Row In order to join in the fun each participant posts an URL on his HNT posting for that week as a comment. If you join in, please do the same, I'd like for you to also post your URL on my post for that Thursday so my post will act as an internal JPG index each week.

I trawled through the folder of published images to see if there had been any that would fit into the HNT design and found quite a few. Here's links to some I liked.

For visiting HNT'ers, if you'd like to comment, it's not possible on a personal post... but click on a photograph you can read other JPGer's comments. Register just to make comments if you want to. As far as posting photographs is concerened that's cool but it would be a really good idea to read the Photo Guidelines before you do, management will remove a photograph that doesn't meet them.

Happy HNT!
