On Being a Boy
By Laura Hartley

There are moments so purely depictive of certain genres, if you will, or of certain small moments in a lifetime, or so evocative of a phase, that their very essence stands alone as classic. These moments must be saved. Here is Gunnar, my younger son, with a massive toad he found out back, amongst the vegetables. It took him a long time, and much unearthing to capture this fellow, and his dirty hands indicate the struggle. Yet, clearly - look at its size - it was worth it! What a prize! And this is what being a boy is about. And this is why I took this picture. Long live boys; and, Oh God yes, long live toads. Even when boys grow up.
