I work in a Laboratory!!
By Jennifer McManus
13 April 2008
At work one Friday afternoon, feeling inspired or possibly just bored, I picked up my trusty Pentax K1000 and snuck around the place. Anywhere and everywhere, back room, basement, and even the bathroom.
I work in a professional photo lab. But when asked I like to say I work in a "Laboratory". It sounds so much more intriguing. The word laboratory conjures up thoughts of important experiments and discoveries taking place. In some cases, I have discovered new visions and points of view that the photography community has sent my way for production.
As the photo lab business is changing to accommodate so many digital shooters, some of the equipment involved in processing and printing film are dying. Meaning that many of the old processors are being deconstructed and moved out. I felt the need to capture some of these remnants of the past in this ageing and sometimes spooky laboratory.
I'm sure that some or most of you have a 9-5 that has little to do with your passion for photography. So I challenge you to let your worlds collide and look at your workplace with your photographic eye. Stay late tomorrow, and look at the monotony in a different light. ( Just don't get fired! ).
