Broken Dreams
By Jeanne Apelseth
4 April 2008
An abandoned farmhouse on the west coast of Norway. After the farm couple passed away, the door was closed behind them. Twenty years later the pill bottles stood - covered in dust on the bedside table, still life plastic flowers draped elegantly in cobwebs glistening in the cold winter sunlight, rocking chair standing empty in the shadows.
There was a presence there. I returned time after time and always felt welcome - even though I was alone. I could imagine the farmwife smiling in a crisp white apron offering warm apple cake and freshly brewed strong coffee. I could imagine her rocking her babies to sleep in the battered rocking chair, gazing out the window watching the sun go down behind the horizon, planning the next day as she softly sang a Norwegian lullaby.
Such is life. Such is death.
