Looking for more of a challenge than the typical "point-n-shoot"? Not sure you're ready for the investment of an SLR? Try one of the Kodak Z series. The Kodak Z650 is quite the versatile little camera. I bought this camera in 2005 primarily for vacation and family photos at the "Black Friday" sale and have never regretted it. It's relatively small in size, (fits in my purse) and holds many features the the less expensive point-n-shoots as well as features of the SLR's. Preset settings are available for quick shots. Action, night shots, macro, and landscapes just to name a few. I know, many of the typical digitals have those features, they are great for quick setups, but it also has PASM settings to experiment with. It is extremely beneficial for the novice photographer to learn some of the aspects and terminology of the more expensive cameras. These settings give the opportunity to experiment with f-stops, appetures and ISO. A histogram feature is available to turn on and off as needed to help determine if the right amount of light is available and the white balance is correct for the perfect exposure. One huge advantage this series has over its mainly automatic cousins is the abaility to add aditional lenses. Numerous sets of macro, polarized, telephoto and wide angel conversion lenses are available to make the growing experience exciting and fun with the ability to produce shots to be displayed proudly. You are sure to be hooked on photography after experimenting with all the features. The best plan of action is to read a few of the many books available as you familiarize yourself with the features.

The wide variety of photo enhancement programs now available make possibilities endless. Be sure to look up the tutorials on special effects such as Orton and Dragan for some interesting treatments for your shots. Of course it has the built in flash and LCD screen that is so convenient and capabilities for tripod which is a must. The timer and multiple shots feature will help keep pictures in focus. The only downside I see is I do want more now and have become completely obsessed with photography. It's not just for family outings.Remember to experiment, imagine and take the chance. What are you waiting for, go shoot something!
