White Women Don't Walk, But Oh What You See if You Do

The white, late model Mercedes accelerated backwards towards me. The driver, an attractive brunette, pushed the electronic button to roll down her window. She smiled, asking me the obvious. "You're walking?"
White women don't walk in this part of the world. They either drive a luxury car like the one beside me or opt for a private taxi. I answered "Yes." Beautiful autumn afternoon and I wanted to "take the air" , trying my best to do a decent imitation of a Jane Austin character. Thinking she might offer me a ride, instead she smiled, winked, replying "Good for you."
These are some of the fun, fanciful signs I noticed on that afternoon in the Ezulwini Valley (Valley of Heaven ) and other corners of one of Africa's most intimate countries.
