Thomas Johnson Bridge
By Allen Price
23 February 2008
The yearbook advisor from the school I work for asked me to photograph the Thomas Johnson Bridge for the cover of their yearbook. At first, I thought, "How hard could it be to get a shot of a bridge?" After studying the bridge for a little while, I realized that it's really one big mass of concrete. Looking at the bridge is like eating flour directly from the bag-- no flavor. The designer, after a night of binge drinking, must have drawn an arch on the back of a McDonald's application and then submitted it. And someone, equally drunk, at the state department approved it.
I had to get creative and I've never really photographed something so extensively. I was up at dawn or went on a boat at dusk. I even trespassed onto someone's property to get a picture.
