The Rangoli (INDIA)

The Rangoli is a painting made on the ground. Every day, early in the morning and in late afternoon, women are beautiful drawings on thresholds of houses or at the entrance to the temples. They draw first dotted the contour patterns with a white powder, usually limestone or rice, before filling in a series of lines and color during certain holidays. The designs are passed down from mother to daughter. Some are very old and date back hundreds of years. There are different styles of drawing from a region of the country to another. Besides adding a touch of art and beauty, Rangolis protect home, family or holy places. They are also a sign of welcome to Laksmi, the goddess of prosperity and for visitors of the day.
