The Things We Leave Behind

Spare key in envelope, labeled

Hobbies, passions, work, and the mundane details of everyday existence. All of these find expression in the objects that we acquire over the course of our lives.

However, once we are no more, others will be called upon to sift through these belongings. Sorting decisions will be made: some objects will be placed into piles of sentimental or material value, while other items will be carted unceremoniously off to the recycling center.

I recently found myself on the periphery of a group of people performing this task. At moments it was clearly quite difficult, while at others it was utterly comical. Yet, almost always, it seemed to be a much-needed catalyst for reviving and preserving memories.

I never met the man to whom these objects belonged. Still, I thought it would be interesting to select a few of his possessions and document them. Others will have to decide whether there is a coherent narrative of a person's life that can be read from these pictures, or whether they just suggest an eclectic life with diverse and seemingly unrelated interests.

Interesting concept and thought about the subject, I always enjoy going to antique stores as much as looking at old victorian houses, and wonder about the history behind all of them.
