Photo Essay

"The Mother Road" Route 66

"Longhorns and Buffalo"

These photographs reminiscence of past days when Route 66 was a thrving thruway and highly traveled until the interstates were established one by one. U.S. 66 was born in 1926 and pieced together like a puzzle using existing promoted trails and unnamed roads, most of which were dirt paths. Route 66 spans eight states, over 2000 miles, and fueled with nostalgia. The Mother Road has always been one of change from the 1930's Dirt 66 to transform into a paved highway by 1938. Lasting and hanging on until the 60's with the interstates becoming more and more popular, the Mother Road began to disappear. By 1985 Route 66 was decertified and no longer an "official" U.S. highway. Now forlorn but renown for its 59 years and today standing almost 8 decades as an American icon is still a route worth traveling. Today, Route 66 is fragments of local highways and access roads but still remains a joy to be explored and experienced. I know, I did!
