Portraiture is one of old genre or style in photography and painting in the art world, at the past time only people from middle class could make portrait. They wear their best costume, expensive necklace, correct gesture and well pose in front of certain background. Shortly, we can see their social status through portrait, and most of people always want to be looked good in front of the camera until now, though photograph or images are so manipulatable and can be artificial. For example; we can show happiness on people faces just by saying "cheese".
I do in different way in making this portraiture project. I bring a lot of plastic fangs everywhere (mostly urban location) and ask people that i met to use it and pose like what they want.
This participative project is quiet fun and hard actually, because not all people want to do it, when i was in China a lot of people wouldn't to do it even my close friend. "I don't want to be looked ugly!" he said. It depends on how people think about portrait.
Through this project i could see what people think about body, beauty, identity and photography itself.
I did this project and presented for the first time at Ruang Rupa Jakarta in 2004.
