Photo Essay

Un-school portraits

Simon

A few days after we had the specialist school photographers come through and photograph us all with our wonderful smiles ("everyone say whiskey!") I decided to bring my camera in and take a few of my own portraits.

I went around during lunchtime asking my friends if I could take their photo; a few refused but most were happy to be photographed. I was unsure what kind of expression I wanted, so I simply asked them to "look neutral".

From an outsiders perspective I imagine these photos appear to be a set of student mug-shots. For me, however, each photo tells a particular story of how I know that person and the memories that I share with them.

Now I'm in university, looking at these photos reminds me of the friendship I've kept and the friendship I've unfortunately lost. What I used to call best friends now feel like strangers.
