Recently I learned that I would be going to Chicago for a business trip. I had not been there as an adult, so I was very excited.

Before that, I had been toying around with the idea of buying a new "toy" camera and had been doing some research on which one I wanted to buy. I had pretty much decided to buy a Holga off of ebay, when I stumbled onto a website called toycamera.com. I lurked around the site for a few weeks looking at the amazing images in the gallery and reading the forum. There, I learned about another website called holgamods.com, where I bought my already modified Holga.

And before that, I learned that Kodak had stopped making the black and white IR film that I loved so much, so I went online to see what other options there were, and I found Rollei IR film, and bought two rolls from B&H. When it arrived, I realized that I had ordered the 120 instead if the 35mm that I had intended to buy.

Around that same time, I read an article on JPG, by Nichole Mabry, about Dr5, a cross processing technique for black and white film. They have a list of films that this process works with and sample images. Included in that list was the new Rollei film. You can choose what speed you want your film developed as, and you can choose to have positive versus negitive film.

The last thing on my shopping list was a new Epson 4490 photo/film scanner, so that I could scan my medium format negatives. My dad found a great deal for me online and ordered it. This was my most challenging aspect of the project, trying to figure out the best way to scan these (I'm not very computer savvy).

The camera arrived the night before I was to leave on my trip, so I thought I was destined to do a project... I needed a change anyway, I've been in a photographic "rut" for a while, and as one of the many Bubba's I know used to say..."a rut is just a grave without end's." (Hey, what do you expect...I live in the south)

So here are the resulting images of the "Everything is New Project". I am hoping to follow up with improved images as I learn more about each of the new items in this project.

If any of you have experience, and helpful hints with the Holga, Rollei IR film, Dr5 or especially the Epson 4490 scanner, please bombard me with your wisdom. And by all means...go out and try something new for yourself!
