...which will end with my death

…which will end with my death

This cycle shows the artist Roman Opalka, the Polish-born French artist whose work belongs to the mainstream of conceptualism. The artist writes a series of numbers – from one to infinity – in white paint on canvas. He initially did this on a black canvas, before changing it to grey; since 1972, he has gradually brightened the background he uses, by adding one per cent white to the background every time he paints. The artist pronounces each number as he paints it and records this on tape, and the evolving image added your picture with visible signs of aging. The cycle will symbolize the transient nature of life. "The idea of painting time became my programme," the artist explains, "which will end with my death." Roma Opalka lives and works in France.
