doing the right thing

"Doing the right thing" often seems to boil down to doing the done thing. It is a somewhat woolly concept which appears to be connected to financial and social and marital status and reproduction (not necessarily in that order). Or maybe it is simply about consumption? In any case, doing the right thing is not an easy thing to achieve, even for those who are allowed to try and find that they *want* to try; and even if they keep trying.
But at least we have the shopfront windows to tell us what it is we are supposed to be striving towards...

Usually we instinctively know what the right thing is. Animals certainly do. It's when we exercise our free will that we frequently err.
