If you're into glass sculpting, doing crazy things with glass or just an interest in modern sculpture generally, then you'd want to know the name Dave Chihuly. Chihuly is a one of a kind Sculptor, and his work with blown glass certainly puts him in a category all to himself.
Of all the pieces of his work that I have seen (and there are many out there worldwide) I was particularly drawn to his End Of The Day Tower (2005) which is currently on display (along with other pieces) at the Fairchild Botanic Garden, Coral Gables, Florida. In fact, this piece was donated to Fairchild by the Clinton Family Fund and is on permanent display.
According to the folks at Fairchild, "Dave Chihuly's first End Of The Day sculpture was made during the Chihuly Over Venice Project in 1995, where the final chandelier was made out of the various colored parts not used in the other chandeliers. Thus it was made at the 'end of the day.' Chihuly was the only non-Italian ever to work with the Italian glassblowers of the Island of Murano. These artists had the tradition of taking the left over pieces of glass to make a sculpture."
Another favorite piece that I had an opportunity to see a few years back was Chihuly's The Sun which was on temporary display until January 2006 at Kew Gardens, London, England. The piece is 13 feet (4 m) high. Truly remarkable to see.
Working with glass in this fashion is amazing and a skill many will want to command, but Dave Chihuly's signature and imprint on this piece of Fine Art is second to none.
Enjoy these few photo 'Snippets' of the finest piece of work anywhere in this category.
