Paul's Collection

Paul is an old friend of mine from the 1980s hardcore scene in Central California. He once owned a cool local record shop called Ragin Records where you could always find alternative underground sounds that no one else carried.

He now lives in an upscale quaint neighborhood somewhere in the conservative bastion of Central California. Looking at the exterior of his home you would never know that inside whole rooms were filled with fringe toys, pop surrealist paintings, low brow ceramic art, obscure first-pressing punk rock 45's that make collectors hearts race and mouths drool. His rooms are veritable Christmas morning orgasmic wonderlands for post-punk junkies who have matured into the realm of art, but who still keep that punk rock edge.

This photo shoot is the first in a new series I am starting on collections. America is a nation of collectors, more so than any other people in the world. Every tourist trap is stocked with plastic snow globes, shot glasses, miniature spoons, buttons, badges imprinted with the logo of the place visited. These are the most obvious and ubiquitous kitsch items Americans collect. But I am after the more unique, fringe, idiosyncratic, might I even say wierd collections that Americans accumulate.
