Mobile Photography

As a professional, on-the-go photographer I never know when or where inspiration will strike. At times, it's impractical or inappropriate to lug around my dSLR everywhere I go. That's why the best camera is the one you carry with you. As an avid user of Apple's iPhone, it's a camera that's never away from my side. It's not the best camera in the world (about 2 megapixels) but it's highly portable and fits in my back pocket without even feeling it. What this camera has over other mobile phones are the applications available to do some post-processing. Some are free, some cost a few dollars. They range from simple Photoshop type programs that allow you to adjust levels and saturation, to ones that are preprogrammed with special vintage photo effects.
That's how this project started: playing around on my iPhone. When I realized what a valuable tool it was for my photography, it became more than just a project of trying to take a mobile photo each day. The point is to record what inspires you as an artist in a simple and unobtrusive way. Sometimes I use it to scout locations or lighting and other times to take meaningful photographs when I'm away from my dSLR.
You don't need an iPhone to play along. Nearly every cellphone has a camera these days, and some also have similar retouching applications.
In a world where virtually anyone with a camera (or phone) can be a photographer, it's time to embrace all this portable creativity. A few weeks ago, a photo taken with an iPhone graced the cover of the New Yorker. The possibilities are truly endless.
