Focus and Re-Ignite
By Jarrod Renaud

In the midst of being very uninspired artistically I decided I wanted to waste a pack of Polaroid film as quickly as possible. Since Polaroid Film production has ended and the price per pack is almost stupid... I thought it was a great idea!
Running with my uninspired and destroyed attitude I decided I wanted to get that feeling across. I was wanting so badly to focus and re-ignite my passion and direction for art and photography.
I wanted to get some contrasting colors. Cold and warm. Blue and red. I powered up my laser jet printer and printed out a couple greenish/blue and red filters on clear projector sheets that I then taped in front of my coveted Polaroid SX-70's lens.
My plan was pretty loose, I wanted some shots to be in focus and some out of focus and all randomly framed. I stood with my back against a light green wall and I held the camera myself and snapped a photo guessing focus and framing and instantly placed the ejected polaroid over an open flame from a lighter which produced some amazing bubbles and cracks. My heart skipped a beat.
Instantly I was feeling better and with each click of my shutter I felt as if I had achieved something original and exciting. I felt freedom with experimenting and not caring how the outcome would be. As I got to the last two shots I knew I wanted the center image to be in focus and a bright red. The moment of truth. Do I bail and wait for someone else to take these shots of me so that my face is framed and focused or do I continue on myself?
I changed out the filters and held the camera in front of my face and caught my reflection in the lens, held my breath... click, kachugg kachugg bzzzzzck. Out popped my Polaroid and over the flame it went.
I waited this time to see what it looked like.
It was perfect. More perfect than I could have asked for.
I learned not to take myself so seriously sometimes and take risks no matter how small they are, the big risks are easy, the small risks are more difficult to address and realize.
Look for the small risks and take them.
