Nature's Winter Art
By Liz Bennefeld

Being mostly homebound during the winter, I despaired, many days, of finding a new subject to photograph. This winter, however, we did not get the plastic sheeting over the window panes (which we should have, to conserve heat and lower fuel costs) with the shades pulled down behind the sheeting, blocking not only the cold drafts, but also any view of winter other than from the front door.
And so, I have found frost on my window panes more often than not since the end of December until the early days of February. I have spent more hours than you could imagine, taking pictures of the frost.
The frost patterns vary according to the time of day, quality and amount of light, and, of course, sub-zero temperatures outside and indoor humidity. So sometimes the frost is scattered, and other times, it's so thick that I can hardly see outdoors. The morning light reflects off the tree trunks, and in the evening lights from the neighbors' windows add their own color to the frost.
The designs are infinitely varied, often quite beautiful--nature's works of art.
