This is a delicacy in the Philippines. For those of you that don't know what you are looking it, it's basically an aborted duck-egg that you crack open and eat with a little salt, of course. I can honestly tell you it wasn't that bad, it tasted mostly of a hard boiled egg and chicken; really.

oh, i love balut! there's this Filipino belief called "lihi" (I think the direct translation would be a "pregnant woman's cravings"). It is believed that whatever a pregnant woman craves for during pregnancy, the baby will inherit some of its characteristics. Therefore, those who were "ipinag-lihi" on balut, will turn out hairy. Another example would be if you were "ipinag-lihi" on grapes, you will be dark skinned. awesome huh? :-)
