THEME ENTRY: "FLUID AND CHANGEABLE"
With a thunderous sound not unlike that which precedes lightning, a mammoth chunk of ice breaks away from the face of a glacier and falls into the thirsty sea. The continuing process is known as "calving" and it occurs throughout the day as the glacier moves toward the sea at a barely noticeable rate of about 6' per day. The glacier is approximately 400' high [40 stories], and the splash created is about half that. An escaping eagle is barely visible at the water line to the very far right. The ice has fallen from the dark hole at the photo's center.
Glacier Bay, Alaska.
TRUE STORY: My Canon Elan 7E film camera with 200mm "L" lens sat atop a carbon-fiber monopod as I awaited this once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity. Seeing my equipment, an elderly gentleman with a $5 disposable camera figured I was the right guy to ask. "Would you mind taking a picture of my wife and me against the glacier?" As I carefully composed the shot of "their" lives, the glacier calved! As he was temporarily holding my camera, my son-in-law could not stop laughing. The man issued a most apologetic face and gesture... but I was out!! BUT WAIT... God loves me. 15 minutes later the Almighty delivered an even more spectacular birth. "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" "WHAT WAS THAT?” MY SON-IN-LAW ASKED. My reply: "a whole roll of film." What you see is frame 18 of 36. God is good!! ... AMEN!

Gorgeous shot. When I was there, no calving. I waited for 6 hours. It took my hands three days to thaw out, and I got a heck of a cold.
