Part of growing up is growing old. This is my aunt, my mom is touching her hand.
They both have Alzheimer's. The disease has progressed farther in my aunt. I see the future for my mother. They might not know anyone around them but they know each other. I find comfort in that.

Thank you all. This makes me smile and cry at the same time. I feel sad when I look at this photo but yet, like I said, I feel comfort as well. My mom doesn't know me but she remembers her sister. They didn't talk much but they sat and looked at each other and held hands.

My grandfather had it bad, very sad. I feel for you. As you said though, it puts your heart at a little ease to know that they find familiarity in each other and comfort, my grandpa didn't have that.

Thank you all so much for you generous words. They touch me deeply.
My mom passed away April 15, 2009. She died in her sleep with her sister sleeping in the bed beside her.
They didn't tell my Aunt that she died but the next day my Aunt yelled her name all day. They didn't have to tell her, she knew from within. -

What a heart-wrenching story. It made my eyes water thinking about growing old, having other people care for you, and, ultimately, love and the human spirit.
