Self Dissection

Hot! In Creepy

The photograph came to me in the shower-- and is largely based on a drawing I did in high school for the cover of a self published book of poetry titled self dissection. The drawing was of a woman in a scientist lab coat looking over her torso, examining the insides with a scalpel.

This photograph was a far more conceptual take on that image. I do not have hundreds of poems to accompany this picture, but I still stuck with words... aspects of my life that require me to stop and dissect-- but also aspects that make up... me.

The lines were drawn to imply both surgical cuts and divisions of animal meat... to imply both views of humans as animals and women as meat... to quote Aldous Huxley in Brave New World "And what makes it worse, she thinks of herself as meat."

In the My body, Myself photo essay.

Wonderful image/imagination. I remember those beef charts describing (a long time ago) the "select cuts". It's a wonderful concept.

This picture haunted me so much that I had to find it again. I suppose that's a sign of a job well done.
The first picture that I've "favorited".
The dehumanizing effect of cutting the head off of a nude model reflects a lot of amateur nude photography; In this case it seems to emphasize the idea of butchering people in a psychological and social sense.

I think it would have been interesting to keep the lab coat idea, and the fork is genius. Well done.
