Kyomai (Kyoto Style Dance) was developed in 17th century Japan during the Edo, or Tokugawa, cultural period. It embodies the elegance, sophistication, and manners associated with Kyoto's Imperial Court. It is a variation of a type of Japanese traditional dance called Mai, with strong Noh (a form of classic Japanese musical drama), or Nogaku, influences. Kyomai is traditionally performed in smaller, Japanese-style rooms so that the audience may closely observe the dancer’s movements.
