I was raised in a devout Italian Catholic household in Buffalo, NY, where we express our beliefs in a private way. Communion. Confession. Crucifixes over the bed. That sort of thing.
I've always been fascinated by how people express their religious beliefs in a public way. This is more exemplified in areas such as the South.
I came across this billboard while driving south on Interstate 65 near Upton, Kentucky in October 2007 to do a photo shoot in the town of Cave City for another series I was working on.
This is photograph is part of a series entitled Jesus Is On The Mainline. It was shot with a medium format view camera. Instead of shooting for maximum sharpness and depth of field, I do just the opposite to bring attention to one portion of the scene that I'm shooting.
