By the time I got to Jonestown, where 909 members of the People's Temple had taken their lives a week earlier in November, 1978—the largest mass suicide in American history—all the bodies had been removed. (Just as well, as far as I was concerned.) But the very ground bore evidence that something awful had taken place here. This is probably the least graphic of the four or five shots I took that day.
