The Lone Rider

I explored New Orleans by myself for a few days in August of 2005. I had read about the historic neighborhood of Algiers Point and decided to take the ferry boat across the Mississippi River to check it out. I'll never forget that boat ride, short as it was, because it's the closest I've been to feeling like Huck Finn. As I stood up to leave, I noticed there was one man who remained seated. I thought of approaching him, but instead I just took a picture of my fellow lone traveler.
He who broke up the repetitive shapes of the chairs and windows.

I went back to Chicago the following day, and two days after that, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. I often think about that man and wonder if he's okay.
