  thanks Audrey for the props and Trish for the comment. here's what it is: tire tracks left by the flattened tire on a black plastic garden-barrow. the darker color is not created by oil but by the dirt from around our resort which is this very black, organic-y, muck-type of stuff. it's got a checkerboard knobby tread like a dirtbike, hence the pattern.
