Under the Big Red Wall
Chinese teens chill out underneath the outer wall of the Forbidden Palace in Beijing. I shot this image as an allegory of modern China, illustrating the bizarre, fragile balance of capitalism and communism within the country. The composition juxtaposes the new generation, which aspires towards the capitalist West, and the looming, overbearing presence of "Red China." With their backs turned to the constant threat of their own government, so much bigger than they are, these carefree teens seem, oblivious,or perhaps defiantly, purposefully blind, to the truths of the country's political situation.
