The Pigeon Coop
Something I love in the skies above most German villages are the sights and sounds of the village pigeons. In many garages and barns, the attics have been adapted into large pigeon coops. The birds are released through windows in the roof and they can come and go, swooping in and out at their whim.
I can honestly watch pigeons and their formations for hours. I once found a carrier pigeon in my cellar heating room, he had to have flown down our chimney and if it weren't for the cat and dog sniffing at the door I would never have known the little creature trapped so deep inside my house. I bundled the bird up and carried it outside to the garden...it was there that I saw the most amazing thing....the pigeon started to dart it's head as if ticking off points on a compass...tick, tick, tick...a flash of recognition and it was off. Returning home freely to it's roost.
