The Earl's Palace.
To the people of Orkney, the palace is regarded as a memorial to what has been described as one of the darkest and bleakest episodes of Orkney history - the brutal rule of the Stewart Earls. The Earl's Palace in Kirkwall was built around 1600 by the notorious Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney, using forced slave labour. Still very much intact, it is one of Scotland's most elegant Renaissance buildings and was occupied by the tyrannical Stewarts only for a very short time, until he was imprisoned in Edinburgh castle and later beheaded by King James VI of Scotland.

Your text is always so well written and interesting! But the photo alone should have drawn many people in the day this was posted, Mike! Shot should be hotter than "HOT" by now! This is such a beautiful photo!
