Lobsang Samten and the Wheel of Time mandala
The Venerable Lama Losang Samten is one of 100 monks worldwide trained to create the mandala sand sculpture. In March he was authorized by the Dalai Lama to begin the solitary project Wheel of Time project at the California State University, Chico Bell Memorial Union. The project took more than a month for Samtem to complete using the ancient chakpus to deliver the individual grains of sand to each section of the mandala. After he completed the sand sculpture, Samtem lead an audience of several hundred people in prayer as they swept up the sand and distributed it in small packets. He also returned the bulk of the san to a nearby creek so it could return to the sea.
