  Ceding roughly two-thirds of the frame to the background, and absolutely filling the right side of the frame with the face of the subject, works remarkably well here. The eye is drawn to the face. The rough, yet lined texture of the background contrasts effectively with the smooth curves of the face. The whites of the eyes, I assume, are processed to give the eyes the striking look.
